17 December 17 - Facebook pr9 backlink?

Facebook pr9 backlink for your site?

What is a pr9? pr refers to “page rank”, in a over simplified summary; PR means how many “votes” a site has, and how important it believes a site is. Facebook has a very high page rank, so a link from a site that Google deems as an authority is great for your own Google rank.

I was recently asked about a pr9 dofollow back-link from Facebook. They had found a website that very basically allows you to install a new tab for your Facebook business page. This sounded fishy from the outset, but I thought I would take a look to be sure.

Not sure what dofollow and nofollow means? I recently spoke about this here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/762722013756794/permalink/1825176184178033/

Sure enough, the web is full of SEO consultants and Marketing gurus that claim to be able to get you a back-link from Facebook via a business page add-on where you can write in raw HTML, and create a dofollow link.

This is utter tripe. It’s preying on people that know a bit, but not enough. On people that are taking their website rank seriously, and starting to understand a bit more than your average Joe; Making you feel like a pro, while actually taking from you.

At best these add-ons are getting a revenue from advertising and at worst they are out take your details and/or money. Most are somewhere in-between.

While the premise seems sound, the add-ons do not allow you to over-ride facebook’s own rules, the add-on’s inherit the restrictions. They are loaded in an iframe, and basically they are dummy links.- Ultimately, getting traction with facebook, google or any platform is going to come down to what you're prepared to put in. There is no easy quick fix.

I was also asked about the link on your personal profile, and whether that helps your Google rank at all, does it count?

You may have noticed a lot of people have a link to their website on heir personal page, here:

I am not suggesting this is for everyone. A lot of people quite understandably want to keep business and personal separate. Others believe that there is nothing more personal than business.

Does that link actually help your website rank? That’s a hard question to answer, because that link is nofollow:

So if you’re looking for an easy pr9 link with some google juice from facebook, then sadly this isn’t going to do it.

However, it does make an interesting example of what was very briefly discussed in the thread above regarding dofollow and nofollow; nofollow can actually help you!

That link right there (and the one that shows the Facebook page(s) you manage) will almost certainly raise awareness:

  • People are nosy, if they see you have your own website then people will want to look at it.
  • Family will want to support you and look at your site. This will also make it easy for them to find, rather than having to ask you for a reminder when they forget.
  • It allows casual acquaintances to browse and take a look without needing to speak to you. Someone who you went to school with ten years ago and haven’t spoke to since does not want to message you about a bouncy castle. They would have to make small talk first and you might not even have what they want. They can look it up and know if it’s worth the effort of speaking to you. Sad, but true.

For the above and many other reasons, it will get people on your site. That’s good for your rank. However, it may lead to direct bookings, which is what it’s all about in any case!

So no, you can’t get a juicy pr9 from facebook and the profile link doesn’t “count” in that regard, but it’s arguably worth doing, and is a good example of why nofollow can be just as (if not more) valuable in some cases.

Want to get that link on your personal profile? Follow these easy steps:

Go to your profile and click on “About” just below where your cover photo is:

Then click on “Contact and Basic Info” and update the website info and save it.

You’ll then have family, friends, acquaintances and frenemies all able to see your business website. This may or may not be for you.
